Chapter 1 summary
Chapter 1:

* Education is ever evolving and a good teacher will know how to adjust and remain flexible through all the changes.
* Why did you become a teacher? What made you realize what you wanted? I was working in a job where I couldn't see myself advancing. I found joy being in a classroom (my mother and father are both educators) and I knew that it was something i could do forever and feel satisfied. I realized my life was worth living to the fullest. That I deserved to be an active participant in my destiny.
* Teaching is a conversation. It needs to be a discussion between the educator and the student and not a power struggle. Once you are fighting over who has control, it's no longer a collaborative environment and learning will not occur.
* Teaching Philosophies should always be based in research. Have the availability of backing up your ideas with concerte evidence.
* Think about all the great teachers in your life. What qualities did you like/not like?
I always felt like an equal. When I feel like I am an equal in a classroom, I am motivated to learn. Respect!
* Remember that you are an ever-evolving human being and your teaching style should change, too.
* Teaching is an essential profession. The power teachers have over the future is astounding. Teachers have impact over what students learn and how students will view their own potential.
* Professional organizations are available to maintain standards and expectations for educators. The orgs provide guidelines and opportunities for teachers have a community of like-minded individuals and to share ideas. Organizations like the NEA also provide workshops and collective bargaining for teachers.
* Standardized testing allows for the assessment of student learning and teaching instructions. It also unfortunately compares students against each other rather than treating each student as an individual learner.
* You not only work with students, but you must manage parent relationships. Often the child is the parents number one priority (hopefully). Teachers, at times, spend more time with students and parents need to be able to trust in the educators in charge of their child's educational career.
